Know Your Idols #15 Sally

by GClarkHellery

Tis the season to be jolly and in preparation for Christmas, I thought I’d post about an under appreciated idol – Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Sally? You ask. But the Nightmare Before Christmas was not a tale of the apocalypse, you cry. People, listen to me, Christmas was nearly ruined by naughty Jack Skellington. If that’s not a catastrophe of apocalyptic proportions I don’t know what is and the only sensible voice was that of rag-tag Sally.

What’s her deal?
Created by Dr Finklestein, Sally was supposed to be his house-keeper, chef, scientific assistant. However, like all independent women, Sally had other ideas and through the clever use of poisons which cause Dr Finklestein to fall asleep, allowing Sally time to explore Halloween Town. Whilst the rest of Halloween Town is excited at the prospect of taking over Christmas, our girl Sally can see the flaw in the plan and tries to stop the craziness.

She says (and she sings too!)
Dr. Finkelstein: That’s twice this month you’ve slipped deadly nightshade into my tea and run off.
Sally: Three times!

Sally: Jack, please listen to me. It’s going to be a disaster!

Sally: [sings] I sense there’s something in the wind / That feels like tragedy’s at hand. / And though I’d like to stand by him, / Can’t shake this feeling that we have. / The worst is just around the bend. / And does he notice / My feelings for him? / And will he see / How much he means to me? / I think it’s not to be.

Sally doesn’t let loose limbs stop her from reaching her goals, knows the importance of keeping essentials in her bag (needle and thread, herbs and poisons) and she isn’t afraid to go against the group to make her point. Plus, she saves Christmas! So as the turkey is baking and the wrapping is being finished, save a thought for our girl Sal, without whom we might all be celebrating a Merry Hallowmas!
