Know Your Idols #3: Ellen Ripley

by Honeybadger

Ellen Ripley, possibly I love her so much because she went back for the cat, but although they were limited space alien attacks rather than full blown apocalypse, the potential was there, thanks to the arrogant fools running the ‘Company’ for wiping out the whole of mankind through chest busting horror and a multitude of gory deaths.

What’s her deal?
An employee on the mining ship Nostromo Ellen Ripley finds herself faced with an arrogant ‘Company’ man, an alien that grows rapidly once it’s burst out of a chest. It rips through the crew and Ripley and the ships cat are the only survivors. When they think they may have a problem on a remote mining outpost Ripley is pulled into going along to check it out. Once again she finds herself facing the enemy’s and this time she finds herself facing an Alien queen and taking on a maternal role herself. The Company never gives up, and in the end even death can’t bring Ripley peace, having sacrificed herself in the third film she is cloned in the fourth, although somewhat altered. Our girl gets a whole new level of predatory in Resurrection and it is awesome! Sigourney Weaver owns this role.

Research:
Alien 1979
Aliens 1986
Alien 3 1992
Alien Resurrection 1997

She Says:
You… BITCH! – A1
You know, Burke, I don’t know which species is worse. You don’t see them fucking each other over for a goddamn percentage. -A2
When they first heard about this thing, it was “crew expendable”. The next time they sent in marines – they were expendable too. What makes you think they’re gonna care about a bunch of lifers who found God at the ass-end of space? You really think they’re gonna let you interfere with their plans for this thing? They think we’re – we’re crud. And they don’t give a fuck about one friend of yours that’s – that’s died. Not one. – A3

So Ellen Ripley, courageous rescuer of cats and children, killer of aliens, teller of truths, hard as nails, willing to do whatever needs doing and endlessly frustrated by the stupidity and greed of our own species. Her apocalypse came from the combination of terrifying alien species and corporate greed.

This one also gets two special shout outs
Newt: The child Ripley saves who shows remarkable courage and clear headedness in Aliens as well as offering useful intel. It’s remarkable she survived at all but to actually be useful is amazing.
Also Alexa Woods: The heroine from Alien VS Predator who teamed up with Preddie to kick ass and defeat the Aliens before they take over the world. Inaccurate movie tagline, awesome heroine.

The Aliens films score extra points for really pushing the strong female characters.
Honeybadger out.
